L'escriptor i periodista George Orwell (Motihari, l'Índia, 1903 Londres, 1950) tenia una curiosa habilitat per situar-se al centre de les contradiccions i les situacions límit, ser-ne partícip i assumir-ne els perills, posant ben sovint en risc la seva vida. Després d'uns anys d'hospitalitzacions continuades i de convalescències combinades amb l'escriptura, va morir en un hospital londinenc als quaranta-sis anys, a causa d'una afecció pulmonar, tot just després d'haver rebut el reconeixement públic a la seva obra. Orwellià és encara avui un terme útil en l'esfera pública, vàlid per a periodistes i escriptors, que incideix en la necessitat de confrontar les xarxes on s'expressa o s'expandeix l'ús excessiu del poder. De la seva obra destaquen "La granja dels animals", "1984" i "Homenatge a Catalunya". A Edicions de 1984 també n'hem publicat "Dies a Birmània".
