En el Nueva York de los años 70, una convergencia irrepetible de música original, influyente y perdurable surgió simultáneamente de las calles de una ciudad al borde del colapso. De Manhattan al Bronx y al barrio de East Harlem, de las discotecas gays a los lofts de jazz, Nueva York encendió la expresión artística y la rebelión de chavales marginados que alcanzaban la mayoría de edad y se unían para hacer punk, disco, salsa y jazz en un momento de libertad creativa que no se ha vuelto a encontrar en un solo lugar desde entonces.
Los participantes en este club recibirán un playlist antes de cada sesión que servirá como banda sonora de aquella semana. Leeremos breves fragmentos de libros. Y haremos algo de ruido por nuestra cuenta, hablando de canciones, artistas y cambio social.
*Tanto las personas que hablan inglés con fluidez como cualquiera que tenga ganas de leer, conversar en inglés a cualquier nivel, o simplemente escuchar, son bienvenidos a este club.

Neoyorquina nativa, Judy Cantor-Navas es periodista musical, productora y autora. Su trabajo explora la cultura y la historia social a través de la música. Conduce el podcast "Punk in Translation" y fue Consultora Musical para la película de Disney ganadora del Oscar Encanto. Recibió una nominación al GRAMMY para sus textos para el recopilatorio The Complete Cuban Jam Sessions. Judy fue la editora fundadora de Billboard en Español, y colaboradora de Billboard durante más de una década. Escribe habitualmente en GladysPalmera.com y en la revista No Depression. Ha sido curadora de música latina para MTV and Google, y fue crítica de rock del Buenos Aires Herald y redactora del Miami Herald y Miami New Times. Ha sido galardonada con un primer premio de los Premios Nacionales de Periodismo Musical y una subvención de la Fundación Cultural Latin Grammy. Actualmente vive en Barcelona.

An English-language Book Club hosted by Judy Cantor-Navas.
In New York in the 1970s, an unrepeatable convergence of original, influential and enduring music surged simultaneously from the streets of a city on the verge of collapse.
From lower Manhattan to the Bronx to the East Harlem barrio, gay discos to jazz lofts, New York ignited the artistic expression and rebellion of disenfranchised kids coming of age and coming together to make punk, disco, salsa, hip hop and jazz in a moment of creative freedom not found in one place since.
This book club will be a master class on New York music and the social history of the city.
Participants in this club will receive a playlist before each session that will serve as that week’s soundtrack. We´ll read short excerpts from the books. And we´ll make some noise of our own, talking about songs, artists, and social change.
*Both fluent English speakers and anyone with a desire to do some reading, conversing in English on any level, or just listening, are welcome to this club.

Native New Yorker Judy Cantor-Navas is a music journalist, producer and author whose work explores cultural and social history through music. She was nominated for a Grammy for her liner notes for The Complete Cuban Jam Sessions (Craft Recordings). She was the story producer and lead script writer of the multiple award-winning Audible podcast Punk in Translation, Cultural Music Consultant for Disney Animation’s Encanto, and translator of the book Cha-Cha-Cha, a Dance and an Era. She wrote the liner notes for the 45th Anniversary edition of salsa great Hector Lavoe’s classic Comedia, to be released in fall 2023. Judy has worked for Billboard, MTV and the Miami New Times and was a rock critic for The Buenos Aires Herald. Awards for her work include a Latin Grammy Cultural Foundation grant and a National Music Journalism Awards first prize. Judy lives in Barcelona.
